Hurricane Preparedness Tips for You and Your Animals

09.28.05

Raleigh, N.C. (September 23, 2005) ? While the Gulf Coast is still reeling from Hurricane Katrina, residents and officials are preparing for yet another hurricane in their area.

During times of inclement weather, animal owners should remember to make preparations for both companion animals and livestock. Making preparations for animals during weather emergencies will significantly reduce the chances of injury and loss of animal life and undoubtedly assist with recovery efforts following any disaster.

North Carolina?s State Animal Response Teams (SART) suggest the following hurricane preparedness tips for you and your animals: Take protective measures: Contact the County Animal Response Team (CART) closest to your area, to ask for your area?s emergency preparedness plan. This plan should include the safest evacuation routes and nearby emergency shelters. For information about North Carolina?s CART organizations, go to www.sartusa.org. Make arrangements for pets: Be sure you have a large pet crate, food, water, medications, leash and ID tag for your companion animals (dogs, cats, etc.). Make arrangements for yourself: Flashlight and extra batteries Portable, battery-operated radio with extra batteries First aid kit and manual Emergency food and water Non-electric can opener Essential medicines Cash and credit cards Sturdy shoes About SART:

Founded in North Carolina after Hurricane Floyd, SART?s mission is providing prevention, response and recovery for animal emergencies.
